PXA Clocker forum is now online!

PXA Clocker, as you can figure from the name, is an application that allows you to change system frequency for Palm OS5-driven PDAs that use Intel PXA processors. The list of supported devices includes dozens of PamlOS gadgets (listed below).

PXA Clocker was debuted in August 2003 as proof of concept application to demonstrate how to change system frequencies for PXA-based devices. It was the first clock management application for Intel PXA processors. PXA Clocker 1.0 worked with Sony Clie devices. A couple of months later we added support for Palm Tungsten platform. Again, before anyone else. Later we added support for PXA270 processors. Guess what? We did it first again!

PXA Clocker allows you to either increase system frequency (up to 230% on some models), boosting performance of complex applications or decrease system frequency to a minimum available setting of 100MHz, allowing you to preserve precious battery power.

Additionally, PXA Clocker has an ability to turn off clock frequencies for unused peripherals, which also extends battery life.

All settings can be changed either globally or per-application. PXA Clocker includes support for applications on memory cards, and for shortcut management applications, such as PowerRun.

Unlike other applications, PXA Clocker does not have any restrictions on what you can change. This gives you flexibility. On the other hand, the lack of fool-proof feature may cause unwanted effects, fatal crashes, and lock-ups. Please make sure that you read all documentation and PDA forum discussions on how to use PXA Clocker correctly.

PXA Clocker can be used with any PalmOS PDA based on Intel PXA25x/26x/27x processor family. The list of devices include Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten T5, Tungsten E2, Zire 72, Zire 31, LifeDrive, TX, and many of Sony Clie devices (NX60, NX70V, NX73V, NX80V, NZ90, TG50). Treo 650 and 700p smartphones are also supported (see note about 700p below).

It is safe to run PXA Clocker on any device to see if it is supported. Unsupported devices will display an error message and the application will quit.

There are two versions of PXA Clocker:
PXA Clocker Lite is freeware, it has all the basic features, but lacks some features that PXA Clocker Pro provides. PXA Clocker Pro users receive free software updates and e-mail suport. For the complete list of differences between Lite and Pro version, please visit Documentation section or look through the readme file. PXA Clocker Pro is a commercial application.

Warning: If you find a problem with PXA Clocker make sure you use either Lite version or properly registered Pro version. There are dirty hacks floating around that may cause lock-ups and data loss. Also, Pro users whose applications end up hacked and published on the web will automatically lose the privilege to receive any updates.

A compatibility problem has been identified with PXA Clocker when used on Treo 700p devices. While PXA Clocker works well on some 700p smartphones, it might not work, and often causes system crashes, on other 700p devices. This issue should be resolved in the future releases. Please try PXA Clocker Lite on your Treo 700p before you decide to purchase the Pro version.
