What is LinkStart and why should I use it?

LinkStart is an application manager. It allows you to move applications to expansion cards and run them transparently as if they were on the device. It may take a little longer for application to start from the card, depending on the size of application and its data, but you save precious RAM space!

Yes, modern PalmOS versions can do it too, but they come with a lot of limitations, for example, there is no way to categorize card applications in PalmOS launcher. There are other disadvantages and limitations as well. Linkstart takes a different approach. It creates a small link application that looks exactly like the original one in the launcher and can be treated as the original application. When this link is launched it loads the original application from card, launches it, waits till it quits, and saves application data back to card.

Yes, there is software that overcomes some PalmOS limitations in similar way, but it has its own problems. In LinkStart there is a way to control how an application behaves when it starts or quits. Here is a list of differences in how major operations are performed by LinkStart and its competitors:

Operation Competitors LinkStart
Start application from card Copy application and all databases from card to RAM and launch the application. Additionaly you can specify which databases need to be copied and when. For example, if you have a dictionary application and 10 dictionaries, you can tell LinkStart that you need only 3 out of those 10. You can also keep some databases or application in RAM and load some databases from card. It is also possible to delete unwanted databases, like cache or history data.
Applicaton quits, data needs to be saved back to card Look for application databases that were modified and save all of them back to card. Additionaly you can specify what to do with each database when application quits. For example, you can tell LinkStart that a cache data does not need to be copied and may be left in RAM or deleted. This speeds up launching and quitting process, and also extends the life of your card that may have limited number of write cycles.
Move application from RAM to card Look for application databases using creator ID and move all of them to card. Same default behavior. LinkStart also features support for applications that use more than one creator ID. You can explicitly specify which databases belong to the application and how they should be handled when application starts or quits.
Link management Not available LinkStart allows you to define how link applications look like, whether they need to be backed up or share category names, et cetera.

Moreover, LinkStart Lite is a free software and it offers more than its commercial comperitors. For advanced users we offer LinkStart Pro which allows you to edit link applications. It is also packed with features that you may or may not need.
